The World of Water

Updated: Apr 22, 2020

Has anyone ever told you that it'll be octillions of years before we run completely out of water? Has anyone ever told you that there's an infinite amount of water in the world? Have you ever thought that you shouldn't bring your water bottle to the beach because there's plenty of water in the ocean?

Do you know that all of those are wrong?

The ocean is in fact water, of course. But it's not what we drink. There are a lot of dissolved solids (like salt) that are too high for our bodies to consume. We would get sick, or die. It won't be octillions of years (probably) because there isn't that much freshwater. Out of all 100% water in the world, 97% is saltwater, 2% is inaccessible freshwater and 1% is accessible freshwater. In the whole wide world, we only have 1% of the water we have to drink.

The 2% freshwater is inaccessible because it's frozen in ice caps and glaciers. The 97% is oceans. There are 5 oceans in the world: the Pacific, Atlantic, Southern, Indian, and Arctic. The 1% accessible water is in springs, lakes, rivers, ponds, streams, waterfalls, and creeks. 71% of the Earth is water, and 29% is land.

If we try to conserve water, it would make all the difference in the world. We would not run out of water for a little bit longer than we might have if we just threw water everywhere we wanted. Water is vital to the human kind and many other animals. We absolutely cannot lose our water.
