The Korean War Armistice

*This was written with the help of my friends Parker and Sophia.

The Korean War went on for three years, or the violence did, at least. The war never actually ended, though. An armistice was signed in 1953 to end the fighting that had begun in 1950. However, this did not officially end the war, which went on for a total of 68 years.

The US sent about 90% of the troops to aid South Korea. The U.S. spent about $67 billion aiding South Korea in the war. It also was the first war with battles between jet aircraft. The truce talks lasted a whole two years and 17 days! Unfortunately, there are 7,704 American soldiers that are still unaccounted for from the Korean War.

Even after the armistice was signed, the fight continued. South Korea did not approve of the nuclear weapons program that Kim Jong Un, leader of North Korea, was running. Citizens spat hate upon the leader and the way he ran his country. One of North Korea’s defectors finds it wrong that some North Koreans don’t know their own mother’s birthday, yet they have no choice but to know Kim Jong Un’s.

As of April 27th, 2018, South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un pledge to formally end the Korean War, 65 years after hostilities ceased. Because of the involvement of the United Nations and countries such as the United States and China in the war, these nations will need to be signatories on an official peace treaty.
